Upholstery for Home Staging

One solution to change and refresh your home decoration for home staging is by re-upholstering your existing furniture. If your furnitures have an old and outdated upholstery, and you plan to use them for staging your home, but your budget does not permit reupholstery, you can use slip cover. That is if the size of the furniture is suitable for the space. Otherwise, you need to consider other solutions.

If you have a piece of upholstered old furniture that does not match the style of your home, and it is such a quality, well-made furniture, consider having it re-upholstered. The best way to do this is to consult with a designer that can help you to select a quality fabric, with pattern and colors that matches the style of your home.

In addition a professional designer will lead you to a professional upholstery shop. A skilled reupholster work is not cheap: a simple sofa in good structural condition averages $1,500 to re-cover (not including fabric, which might cost anywhere from $15 a yard to more than $100 a yard); an armchair might cost $1,000. Additional charges may include tufting, refinish legs, upgrade to goose down-feather fill, or taking the sofa apart and re-drilling and re-gluing the dowel joints.

Consulting with a professional designer can eliminate dealing with a re-upholstery shop that cut corners, by not removing the dirty, or may be contaminated old fabric before re-upholstering, or by not using the same quality foam and filler as they claim.

Scotchgard is no longer a good choice to repel stains from fabrics, carpets, clothing, and upholstery. 3M has pulled the Scotchgard from the market since 2000. Scotchgard contains perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) which apparently persist in the human body for about 8 years. Scotchgard has been replaced with product that contains perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS), which has a shorter carbon chain that has been shown to persist in the human body for only a few weeks.

But if you are looking for temporary solution, low cost re-upholstery such as changing the simple side chair or dining room chair cushions is a good option. The labor cost may be around $60 and up. Labor cost for re-upholstering cushion covers can start from $30 and up depending on size.
